Bratislava Public Transport
Public transportation in Bratislava is running by Dopravny podnik Bratislava. There are three types of transport vehicles used in Bratislava including buses, trams and trolleybuses.
There are 3 main interchange points in the city center where you can get a bus or tram nearly to anywhere else:
Hodzovo namestie (Presidential palace) for northwest- and east-bound bus connections.
Postova (down the ped area below Hodzovo namestie) for trams. Novy most (close to St. Martin's Cathedral and the Danube banks) for trams and for west-bound buses as well as bus connections to Petrzalka. At www.imhd.sk you can find all relevant information about public transportation in Bratislava with schedules, maps and an online route planner.
Tickets are sold in many newsstands and in every tourist information bureau. There is also a possibility to buy a Bratislava City Card which combines a 1 to 3-day ticket with various discounts.
At most stops in the town there are ticket vending machines, they work with Slovak coins only. Trolley and tram drivers in Bratislava do not sell tickets, therefore you need to buy a ticket before entering a trolleybus or a tram. You must validate your ticket in the validation machines on the bus/tram after boarding (via any door).
In Bratislava there are two types of tickets: time-tickets for more transfers and prepaid zone tickets (24-hour, 48-hour, 72-hour, 168-hour, 1-month, 3-month and 1-year).
Main tram, bus and trolley lines operate from 5am to approximately 11.30pm. If you need to travel by bus at night, go to the main railway station which is the main night line interchange point or use the bus stops at the Presidential palace (Hodzovo namestie).
If you have decided to bring your car into the Old Town, then plan an average of at least 50 Skk per hour parking in a guarded car park. For other destinations you can drive to some point near your destination and find a place by Parking Guidance System. www.parkovanieba.sk
There are a few spots to park free of charge in and near the Old Town, but these are frustrating to find. During daylight on weekdays, even for street parking you will need to buy hourly tickets from yellow-vested attendants or risk being towed.
